Mazda RX-9 spotted testing in RX-8 clothes..?
Mazda’s RX-8 has been out of production since 2012, even before then there were rumours that the upcoming successor have refused to die. That’s of course a welcome because Mazda keeps reminding us that they’ve engaged dedicated team of engineers specially for working on a rotary powered sports car that can both earn a profit and pass emission tests.
Recently we’ve heard from Mazda that their next rotary car won’t be seen 2021 but these photos at least suggests that they’ve taken a step forward in the rotary development.
According to MotorTrend It’s difficult for them to assure that this RX-8 is definitely an RX-9 which is just wearing old school clothes. As you can see in the picture above, the front end has been modified for additional cooling that not a thing regular RX-8 would need. They also said “we couldn’t find a car wearing this exact plate, Mazda’s prototypes do tend to wear HG DC plates in Europe.”.
For a sec if we assume this actually is the upcoming RX-9, unfortunately it’s still got a long way to go before we’d see anything with production intent.
Even if Mazda is testing a rotary based car, they can easily dump the project long before it comes to the market. This is at least the first step we’ve seen in terms of RX-9 which actually is seeing some success.
The fact is Mazda claims that they’re working on a rotary engine but what ifs nothing but PR spin on the rotary range extender that we’ll be seeing soon.
Still on a positive note we’re choosing to believe that this mule is a positive sign.
As MotorTrend says -Long live the rotary engine, and long live Mazda’s rotary powered sports cars.
